An apple was used to demonstrate what a cavity looks like. Small holes were poked in the skin of the apple to represent the small area of enamel that can get weak on the tooth’s surface. Then, after a few days the apple was cut open and showed a how large the cavity got even though the outside hole was small. This is very similar to how cavities appear in teeth.
